The way we talk to adoptees about God matters & healthy theology changes lives.

Pre and Post-Adoptive faith-based coaching might sound strange or maybe like a red-flag to people trying to avoid weird woo-woo hyper spiritual, conservative pro-adoption programming. I promise: this is NOT that. Let me tell you what this coaching is like.

The pre and post-adoptive faith-based coaching that I provide is an effort to promote new ways of thinking about adoption & God that do away with old "savior” dynamics that were originally at the root of Western Christian movements for adoption. These sessions are intended for adoptive and prospective adoptive parents to reflect, explore, and discern how they think about God’s character, how that impacts their view of adoption & family, as well as learn practical skills for talking about faith, spirituality, and God’s role in the story of their child and family. I also offer services specifically for adoptees that are priced differently and have different goals. Please see the “For Adoptees” page.

As an adoptee and theologically trained youth worker, I bring a unique perspective that is difficult to come by in many other spaces intended for adoptive parents. Social work and counseling provide key professional insights into the social-emotional structure of your home and parenting dynamics but faith-based coaching provides you specific opportunities to consider how you will discuss your faith with your child and how to develop your child’s faith and spirituality in healthy ways.

About the Sessions

Sessions are typically 1-hr and are for any adoptive parent whether intending to single-parent or parent as a joint couple. Sessions consist of a variety of discussions or reflective activities.

Here are some examples of topics we may cover in coaching sessions:

  • Implicit biases

  • Beliefs and messages you grew up with about adoption

  • Current values & beliefs

  • Your view of God’s character

  • Spiritual practices

  • Practical tools for family discussion

Interfaith/Multifaith Families -

I hold a Bachelor’s in Comparative Religious Studies and have a multifaith background. Although my particular professional degree is in Christian theological movements around adoption, I am capable and competent in providing services to multifaith/interfaith couples and families who wish to receive coaching that is not solely Christian. I am able to walk through each person’s individual background and believe to help the whole family come to an agreement about healthy ways to help their future adopted child explore their own beliefs, establish a connection to the family’s culture, and experience a safe and non-judgmental environment to question and explore what is divine and sacred to them.

What coaching is NOT:

The coaching that I provide is NOT mental health counseling and should NOT be used in place of seeking mental health services from a qualified and licensed mental health professional. This coaching is also NOT to be used in place of or instead of other mandatory or otherwise recommended pre-adoptive counseling with qualified social workers or adoption case workers through adoption agencies.
